PROBLEM ADDRESSED: The challenges we propose to solve with our product line are linked to both the construction, agriculture, and environment sectors.One major problem with the construction sector, cements in particular, is its large energy consumption and CO2 emissions (contributing 8% of global emissions). In addition, the poor mechanical properties of cements can lead to the development of serious cracks and reduce the lifespan of construction materials overall.On the other hand, the agri-food sector such as the production of sugar, olive and argan oil generates large quantities of under-utilized biomass waste which could harm the environment if not wisely recycled.

 

APPLICATION SOLUTION: In order to solve those problems, MONACO will manufacture a sustainable nanocellulosic product named Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) from the unutilized local agricultural and industrial biomass waste in order to produce high added-value additives. The produced NCC will be an organic and sustainable nanomaterial lighter than aluminum, stronger than steel and less onerous than the existing nanomaterials. In addition, NCC will play the role of a nanofiller to allow the reinforcement of cements, improving their performances as well as optimizing their use in construction with easier handling, longer stability and higher strength.With all these characteristics in mind, NCC will be a strong candidate for many promising applications such as plastics and composites, painting and coating, and others.
